Whittier

Welcome to Whittier

A peaceful and historic community just outside Central Los Angeles

Tucked in between Los Angeles and Anaheim lies the picturesque, family-friendly community of Whittier. Known for its idyllic blend of small-town living and larger-than-life atmosphere, Whittier has become one of the most desirable communities in the greater Los Angeles area, attracting young professionals, families, and retirees alike.

Originally part of a Spanish land grant in exchange for military service, the land was acquired with the rest of California by the U.S. after the Mexican-American War in the 1840s. German immigrant Jacob Gerkens then purchased 160 acres of land from the government to build his own homestead. Quakers then quickly began to settle in the area with hopes of building a Quaker community. These settlers planted an abundance of citrus fruits and walnuts, shipping them across the country and giving the region its reputation as a thriving agricultural area.

Since then, the town has remained a rural and primarily residential area with a vibrant commercial district and thriving economy throughout the year.

The average annual household income in the community is just above the national average, and homes in the area have a median value of nearly $600,000.

With various parks, preserves, and green spaces to enjoy in the surrounding area, families are often seen enjoying themselves out and about, especially on the weekends.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The dining scene in Whittier is inarguably one of the best and most vibrant around, with a variety of exciting and eclectic eateries around every corner. Phlight is certainly one of the local favorites, serving a unique and exciting take on Latin-style cuisine. Their menu includes everything from spinach and manchego croquettes and adobo chicken wings to chile rellenos and lengua soft tacos.

Another Latin restaurant with a fusion twist is Costas, which has won the hearts of the Whittier community with dishes like chorizo sliders, red snapper ceviche, and pork belly tacos. Bizarra Capital has been serving up elevated and exciting Latin-inspired cuisine to the community for years. With dishes like grilled Mexican octopus in mojo Verde, flank steak chimichangas, and grilled shrimp tacos, it’s no wonder this is always one of the hottest places in town.

Of course, residents with a craving for exceptional gastropub fare will love the Rusty Monk Restaurant and their menu, including short rib poutine, fish and chips, and lamb shepherd's pie.

Things to Do

While Los Angeles and Anaheim are both just a short drive away, there’s so much for residents to do right in Whittier all year round. The Hellman Park Hiking Trails are another great place to enjoy a day out with the family. The inclines on this short 4-mile hike can be a bit of a workout, but the views alone will make it more than worth the effort. Or, if you’re looking for something a bit more relaxed and laid-back, you may enjoy the natural beauty found in Murphy Ranch Park’s 48 pristine acres.
